Business Facts and Figures
Agriculture plays a vital role in York’s economy, with 38% of registered businesses in 2009 involved in this sector. With a total shire area of 213,300ha, agricultural land holdings span over 136,135 hectares and generate an impressive $46.2 million in production value each year. This success is driven by the diverse range of crops grown, such as wine and olive production alongside traditional grain crops of wheat, canola, barley and lupins, which deliver higher yields and strong price returns, resulting in a productive $254 per hectare.
In addition to agriculture, York’s economy benefits from a range of other industries. Manufacturing, transport, and logistics make up 5.2% of local businesses, with 109,606 hectares of zoned industrial land available for growth. Strategic planning is already underway to identify new areas suitable for expansion.
Retail plays another important part in York’s economic landscape, with 7.1% of registered businesses operating in this sector, further supporting the Shire’s diverse and growing economy.
